changing drawer hardware

When it comes to repurposing furniture, changing out drawer pulls and knobs is an easy and affordable way to completely transform the look of a piece. This is a perfect project to enhance your bedroom furniture, and you’ll be amazed at how a small dresser hardware change can modernize and change the style of your dresser.

Let me show you an example! We bought a white dresser from Land of Nod about 5 years ago for my daughter.  However, we completely remodeled her room last year, and we no longer needed the dresser.  But, I couldn’t bring myself to sell it, and I knew I could make it work in our new guest room…with a little drawer hardware change.

I bought some beautiful, oil rubbed bronze drawer pulls from Home Depot. You can only order them online, but you can ship them to the store for free. These were an easy swap for the white wood knobs (they both have only a single screw, so no drilling needed).

Our Dresser After

And, here is the new and improved dresser with the new drawer hardware installed. What once looked like a simple dresser that you could find in any kids room, now looks like a sophisticated, modern farmhouse dresser that could be used in any bedroom.

It’s amazing how a drawer hardware change can totally improve the look of a piece of furniture. And, it gets me one step closer to matching the picture of my inspiration room from Fixer Upper.

So if you have a dresser or piece of furniture that needs a little updating, consider making a dresser drawer hardware change! It’s an easy and fast project that doesn’t cost a lot, and can really change and improve the look of your furniture!

Where to Buy Hardware for a Dresser

You can buy dresser drawer hardware at your local Home Depot, Lowes, or other hardware store. You can also find a great selection of hardware at online retailers like Wayfair and Amazon. My favorite brand for knobs is Top Knobs, but you can find gorgeous, great quality

What Kind of Hardware Should you Buy for your Dresser?

The most important thing to consider when buying hardware (knobs or pulls) for your dresser, is matching the holes from your existing hardware. In other words, if you have existing knobs with a single screw (a single hold in your drawers or doors), you can install any new knob that also has a single screw. Super easy, right?

If you have dresser drawer hardware that is a handle style (with two holes), things get a little more complicated. You’ll want to replace those handles with another handle in the same size. In other words, you’ll need to carefully measure the distance between the two holes in your drawer or cabinet, and buy new hardware with that same separation distance between holes.

The next thing to consider is style! What style do you want your dresser to have? If you want to go more modern, look for simple hardware with sleek lines. For a vintage look, choose hardware with more intricate details in traditional finishes.

How to Change your Drawer Hardware

Step 1: Open the drawer or cabinet and unscrew the existing knob/pull with a screwdriver, while holding the other end of the knob or handle steady in your hand.

Step 2: Clean any dirt or grease that is on the door or drawer front from the old hardware.

Step 3: Insert the screw for the new knob or handle into the existing holes. Start screwing the new knob onto the screw with your hand, and then tighten it firmly with a screwdriver.

Step 4: Step back and enjoy the new look of your dresser!

This is a fantastic DIY project for beginners. It’s super easy and fast, with immediate results. What more could you ask for?
