Hey everyone! We have made some serious progress with the DIY built-ins for our daughter’s room over the past couple of weeks. Our original vision is getting very close to being finished…it’s so exciting! If you’d like to catch up, you can read more about this project here and here.

Trundle Bed Face

A week or so ago, my husband made a decorative cover for the trundle bed. Here it is before being painted.diy trundle face

And here it is installed on the trundle bed, with its pretty crystal knobs.

Bookshelves

After we installed our side cabinets, we followed that up by adding a painted plywood countertop over the drawers and side cabinets. Once that was done, we immediately started building the upper bookshelf units that would go over the drawers on each side of the window.

It seems that with every home improvement project, it has to get a little ugly before it gets pretty.  In order for the bookcases to go in, we had to remove the crown moulding in the room.  I have to say it was a little heartbreaking taking down the crown moulding…like taking one step backward just to take another step forward.  But, I know it will all look great in the end…whenever that is…

Once the bookshelves were painted and dry, we installed them on either side of the big window in my daughter’s room.

We had to wait a couple of days after this step to prime and paint the shelves before installing them and moving forward. Next, we installed some 1×2 trim around the bookcases. The shelves should be thoroughly dry in a few days and ready for all of her books and “treasures.”

Side Cabinet Doors

A while back, we built some small side cabinets to fill the gaps between our DIY daybed and the drawer units. This past weekend, we made some cabinet doors for our homemade side cabinets. Here they are before priming/painting.

And, here they are all finished and installed on the cabinets! Now, I’m not gonna lie, installing those doors was a big challenge! Those cabinet doors fought back…for the first 90 minutes they just plain refused to cooperate.  But, we prevailed in the end, and they look pretty darn good, if we do say so ourselves.

When we stood back to look at the room tonight, I thought, “Wow!  We’ve come a long way!”  I don’t want to get too far ahead, but I’m feeling like these DIY built-ins are so close to being done, and I’ll be writing a room reveal post in the very near future!
