Bohemian or Boho, is a style that first became popular in the 1960s and 70s. While its popularity has ebbed and flowed over the years, today it is once again a hot interior design trend. Bohemian interior design is known for being eclectic, colorful, relaxed, and carefree. It combines global-inspired patterns with unique decorative items that tell a story about the people who live in the home. Bohemian style doesn’t have any defined rules, and no two Boho rooms are ever quite the same, but they do share certain similarities. Today, I’m sharing some tips for achieving a boho interior design style in your home.

1. VIBRANT COLORS

Jewel tones, warm earthy colors, and metallics (especially gold) are common colors used in Bohemian style. When I design a Boho-inspired space, I prefer sticking to a more neutral base color for the walls (whites, grays, browns), and then accessorizing with pops of bright, rich colors. But, you can certainly opt for a deep, saturated color on the walls, and then layer in more colors, along with some neutrals, to create a vibrant look.

Some of my favorite accent colors to use for Boho decor are emerald green, orange, magenta, and sapphire blue. When it comes to Bohemian color palettes, the bolder the better, though you should aim for a consistent color scheme to keep things from looking too overwhelming or chaotic.

2. VARIETY OF PATTERNS & TEXTURES

The best way to achieve a Boho interior design style is to mix and match different patterns, shapes, and textures. Look for global-inspired materials and patterns, like Ikat and Shibori, to create an exotic feel, and use a variety of textures to create visual interest.

When thinking about adding “texture” to a space, think about things that look like they would be interesting to touch, like soft throws, natural fiber rugs, or smooth lacquered wood with a beautiful pattern. A variety of textures make a room feel cozy, and complete, and engage the senses. Textiles, plants, baskets, faux fur, and macramé are classic ways to add in texture for Bohemian style rooms.

3. PLANTS & MORE PLANTS

A Bohemian space just isn’t complete without plants. In fact, you may see a lot of plants in Boho rooms! They add great texture, a relaxed natural feel, and a bright pop of green color, so it’s easy to see why they are so popular in these spaces. Bring your room to life with large potted plants, small hanging plants, succulents, or even faux greenery (faux greenery is better than no greenery!).

For Bohemian interior design, popular plant varieties include Philodendrons, Fiddle Leaf figs, ferns and palms. Mix things up with macrame plant hangers, colorful planters, terracotta urns, or baskets.

4. LOTS OF LAYERS

There’s a saying when it comes to Bohemian interior design – more is more! Layering is key to achieving a Bohemian look, so don’t forget to add in throw blankets, rugs, tapestries, floor pillows or poufs, decorative items, and wall decor/artwork! The layers create a visual playground for your eyes to explore, and are vital for creating that casual, cozy vibe you want in your Bohemian space.

5. GLOBAL-INSPIRED ACCESSORIES

Bohemian decor should tell a story about you, and include objects from your travels, handmade items, and family heirlooms. Not a world traveler? That’s OK, you can find some great items at your local antique shop, World Market, or HomeGoods. It’s all about showing off your personality with items that speak to you. And, don’t forget to include soft lighting, like lamps and candles, to create a calm, relaxed feeling throughout the space.

How do you create a Boho bathroom?

Boho has become a major trend for bathrooms, too! Now that we’ve talked about Bohemian style, how does one go about implementing it in a bathroom? You may not get to bring a lot of cozy items and layers into your bathroom decor, but you can certainly play with color, pattern, texture, plants, decorative objects, and mood lighting!

Check out this amazing boho chic bathroom! It has a great mix of vibrant colors, a bold black freestanding tub, a variety of textures, gold/brass accents, and plants…all set against a neutral white base color. So pretty!
