Do you know your interior design style? Taking a home decorating style quiz is not only a fun distraction, but it can give you some insight into the decorating and design styles you are drawn to. Why is this important? Because defining the style for your home will make your overall design look more cohesive, and it can help you understand what furnishings and accessories to purchase that will work within that style.

home decorating style quiz

There is no perfect style quiz out there, and you shouldn’t be surprised if you get different results from different quizzes. But, they can give you a little direction…a place to start if you’re feeling really lost. I took about 15-20 online style quizzes that I found, and compared it to my true style preference, which I happen to already know. It was fun to see which quizzes were able to nail my style, and which ones were way off.

In this post, I’m sharing the top 5 decorating style quizzes that mostly guessed my style correctly. These 5 seem to be the most reliable in capturing important aspects of your design style preferences. My baseline style is Modern Farmhouse-Coastal, and I sometimes swing slightly toward Industrial, Bohemian, and even Traditional. OK, let’s see some quizzes!

1. Havenly Style Quiz

Havenly will always have a special place in my heart, since I used to work for them. They have a great style quiz, where you select different pictures of rooms that you’re drawn to. I have to say that their results were very close to my overall style preferences. The results said I was mainly Farmhouse, with Coastal, Classic, and Bohemian substyles. I really like the fact that they identify substyles for you, since I happen to have a few!

2. Pottery Barn Style Finder

We all know Pottery Barn has great style, and they know how to create drool-worthy rooms, so I was interested to see what their quiz would be like. The Pottery Barn quiz shows you different colors, patterns, metals, and even plants to help you determine your style. I took this one twice and came up with two different results: Global and Farmhouse. I can see the Farmhouse, but Global wasn’t quite right. You don’t need to give your name or email for this quiz.

3. Decorist Style Quiz

This quiz has just 5 easy questions, and is another one where you’ll have to give your email address at the end for your results. The Decorist Style Quiz said I was Modern, because I “love an uncluttered space and the clean approach of modernist styles.” That’s true, though the uncluttered space thing is more like a wish than a reality.

4. Houzz Quiz: What’s Your Decorating Style?

Houzz is a great source for design inspiration and real-life house projects, so it’s not surprising they have a decent style quiz. This quiz is a little different than the others in that you are asked a series of multiple choice questions that don’t seem to have a lot to do with design. My favorite had to be the one about my ideal pet…

The Houzz style quiz pegged me as Coastal style. How they got that from the questions, I’m still not sure.

5. Designer Society of America Style Quiz

This is a great little quiz that will show you pictures of rooms, furniture, and artwork to help determine your style. They guessed my style as Coastal Chic, and even understood that I wan’t about a beach shack…more like a 5-star coastal getaway. They even gave me suggestions for design magazines I might like, and places to shop!

Not only are these home decorating style quizzes a fun distraction in today’s crazy world, but they might just help you understand your design preferences a little better. Whether you already know your style, and just want to see if the quizzes work for you, or you have no clue what styles you like, go check them out and see what they have to say about you.

What if you still need more direction?

Style quizzes can help give you a starting point, and you might see some common themes start to emerge, but what if your results aren’t helpful or all over the place? Is there any hope for finding your decorating style? The answer is YES!

If you find that you don’t quite relate to any one style, then your own unique style is likely a mix of several different interior design styles. In that case, you’ll need to focus on the key features of the styles you like most, and blend them together to create a style that is unique to you.

My Discover Your Decorating Style course will walk you through the steps to find the design styles that speak to you the most, pull out the key features you love, and then drill down into defining the detailed elements of your style, like the wall colors, furniture lines, window coverings, and decorative accessories. Then, you’ll make a plan for how to incorporate your new style into any room in your home. Not only is this course fun, with its very own style quiz, but you’ll learn invaluable decorating skills.

Regardless of whether you love one of the established design styles, or have a completely unique style unlike anyone else’s, the key is to take note of the main features of that style, and then bring those features into your room…in everything from the color scheme to the furniture styles to the pillows and accessories. When you can implement a style into your room in a consistent way, not only will it look more cohesive, but it will reflect your personality and feel more like YOU!
