Wow! Can you believe we’re almost in a new decade? I can’t wait to see what new design trends will define the 2020’s. Leading paint manufacturers think they have a good grasp on upcoming color trends, and have announced their 2020 paint colors of the year! These paint colors have been selected by color experts and designers to represent the upcoming year’s trends, and are a great indicator of which colors will be hot in the design world. It’s always fun to see which colors have been chosen, so let’s take a look!

Sherwin-Williams

Sherwin Williams believes that “2020 is an empowering year of change that focuses on bringing your best self into the new decade. The next 10 years pave the way for wellness of the mind, body and soul – a clean palette for self-nurturance.” OK, that all sounds pretty good. So, what color do they think represents all of that?

Sherwin-Williams has chosen one of my all time favorite paint colors as their 2020 paint color of the year, and it might surprise you! Naval SW 6244, is one of the best navy paint colors out on the market, and a true designer favorite.

According to Sherwin-Williams, Naval is the perfect color to represent the fusion of a “fresh decade of change” and the “inspiring power of nature.” This navy is a timeless, rich color that works beautifully with natural materials, bold colors, muted neutrals, and a mix of metals. It’s a relaxed and approachable shade, that can be both calming and invigorating.

So, if you’ve already been enjoying decorating your home with trendy navy blue accents, you’re gonna love the fact that navy is here to stay – at least for 2020!

Benjamin Moore

Benjamin Moore says that the new decade will usher in a trend of more expressive, saturated, optimistic colors in our homes. Their choice for paint color of the year is First Light (2102-70), which is a soft, fresh pink hue. According to BM, “we’ve been in the neutral zone for a long time, and we love neutrals, but we feel people are ready to bring color into the home.” I love neutrals, too, but I agree that it’s time for a little more color.

Now, First Light is not going to appeal to everyone, but you might be surprised how versatile pink can be. It can be a good first step if you’re looking for an alternative to white or beige, but want only subtle color in your home. I wouldn’t hesitate to use this pretty, upbeat shade in a bedroom, or as an accent wall, but wouldn’t recommend painting your entire house pink! I still believe neutrals shades are best for whole-house paint colors, with each room having its own unique and fun color palette.

PPG

PPG had my vote for best paint color of the year in 2019, and they’ve chosen another beautiful, saturated hue for 2020. PPG’s paint color of the year is Chinese Porcelain (PPG1160-6) – a “blend of cobalt and moody, ink blue that imparts calmness and restful sleep while also offering the spirit of hopefulness – a commodity in a restless world.” Are you getting the sense that these paint manufacturers want us to be happier in 2020? 🙂

PPG agrees with the others that the dominating trend in 2020 is more color! Dee Schlotter, PPG’s senior color manager, says “consumers are tiring of stark grays and are looking to infuse colors that delight the senses.” If you’re ready to incorporate a bold blue into your home, Chinese Porcelain could be a great choice. It’s dark enough to almost read navy, but has a little more energy – perfect for an accent wall!

Kelly-Moore

Kelly-Moore went with a bold choice for their 2020 color of the year – Sun God (KM5183)! This is a “fiercely optimistic and independent, yellow” that will make a “statement of personal passion and confidence.” Kelly-Moore is another company hopping on the “optimism” train for 2020, and feels that our monochromatic homes need to be interrupted with bright, bold colors. My advice? This is a color that should be reserved for accent walls, furniture pieces, and accessories, as it could quickly overwhelm an entire room.

For a bold, sophisticated look, try pairing Sun God with navy blue walls, and magenta accents, like in this next photo.

Behr

Behr is looking to bring us Back to Nature (5340-4) in 2020, with a “restorative and revitalizing green hue that engages the senses and pairs well with other colors both inside and outside your home.” Behr tells us that interacting with nature can have a huge, positive impact on our creativity, health, and overall wellbeing, and they wanted to choose a color that would reflect this. The subdued qualities of Back to Nature made it an easy choice.

While I agree this is a pretty color, I admit that I’m not overly excited about it…maybe because it has so much yellow in it. However, Behr has many other beautiful colors in its 2020 Color Trends palette, so be sure to check those out for some more paint color inspiration.

What do you think of the picks for 2020 paint colors of the year? I definitely like the trend toward more color in the next decade. My favorite this year has to be PPG’s Chinese Porcelain. OK, your turn! Which one is your favorite, and have you used any of these colors in your home?
