Can you believe the year is coming to an end? To help get you ready for the new year, I’ve rounded up the hottest interior design trends that are predicted for 2018. Now, I’ll be the first to tell you to choose designs and decor that you love, no matter what experts say is the latest trend. But, if you think your home could use a little “refreshing” in the design department, then read on to see if any of these trends will work for you. I have to say I’m really digging some of these fresh ideas!
BOLD COLORS
Bold colors are making a comeback in 2018. You can see this just by looking at the Paint Colors of the Year that the paint companies have selected. Hot colors for 2018 will be green, teal, navy, eggplant, red, bright yellow, and dark gray.
MIXED METALS
Can’t choose just one metal to use throughout your home? Well, you don’t have to. Mixing metals is not only acceptable to do, it’s actually a hot trend for the new year. So mix up the metals for your faucets, your light fixtures, and your door hardware to add some visual interest throughout your home.
MORE COLOR IN THE KITCHEN
According to design professionals, all-white kitchens are on their way out. However, two-toned kitchens are in! The key is to introduce some other color besides white. For example, pair white upper cabinets with dark gray, navy, or black lower cabinets.
BROWN & BEIGE
According to interior design experts, brown and beige will be making a comeback this year. So, if you never jumped on the gray bandwagon, just sit tight because your beiges and browns will soon be back in style. If you still love your grays, like I do, then consider adding more warm elements to your home with natural wood or leather to start embracing this returning trend.
WALLPAPER
Wallpaper was already a huge trend in 2017, and it continues into 2018. Especially popular in bathrooms and powder rooms, wallpaper will continue to be a great way to add a dramatic focal point to any room. Which pattern should you choose? Geometric and agate designs will be the most popular this coming year.
NATURAL WOOD ELEMENTS & WOVEN MATERIALS
Adding natural elements into your home is a great way to make your spaces feel more welcoming and relaxing. It brings the look and feel of nature into a home which is an essential design element. Wood flooring is still king in 2018, but the trend is toward lighter, textured wood floors, rather than dark wood. If you have dark floors already, don’t despair, just add some lighter wood elements (furniture and accessories) throughout your home. Woven items are another great way to add a natural element to your space. Baskets and wicker add great texture and warmth to a room. One of the reasons I love Joanna Gaines’ style so much is because she effortlessly incorporates natural elements into all of her designs, whether it be beams, furniture, decor, or antique doors.
CONCRETE
Concrete is going to make a statement in 2018. If you want to do something different in your new kitchen, consider concrete countertops. Or, what about adding concrete tiles to your bathroom floor or fireplace? Concrete is a cold, industrial material, so just be sure to add lots of natural elements to your space to balance it out.
BLACK FIXTURES
I love black fixtures, so this one got me excited. Look for black fixtures to replace the current brass fixture trend in 2018. The good news is that black goes with everything, and it’s easy to keep clean! Pair black fixtures with white subway tiles and natural wood for a fabulous dramatic look.
COLORFUL TRIM
Who says your baseboards and trim all have to be white? in a recent Fixer Upper episode, Joanna Gaines recently showed us how beautiful gray trim can be with white walls.
And, take a look at this stunning foyer with black trim! If painting your trim another color gives you anxiety, just remember, it’s only paint and it can always be painted white again.
So, what do you think? Will you implement any of these trends in your home next year? We have an all-white kitchen, but I’m thinking of wrapping our island with trim and painting it a new color. I’m also thinking about some wallpaper in our powder room. I’m predicting fun projects for the Welshes in 2018!
Well, that’s a wrap for 2017. I wish you all a safe, happy and healthy New Year!
I really like most of these trends. I especially dig the concept of painting baseboards a different color than white, mixing metallics and black fixtures. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
I think you are spot on with these trend predictions. Great article… loved it.
Thanks Wendy!
I’m a brown and beige kind of girl and thrilled that these colors are back in vogue!
I think a lot of people out there are going to be happy to see these colors making a comeback! 🙂
Love these new trends. Trying to get brave enough to paint my kitchen cabinets.
Painting cabinets will definitely transform the look of your kitchen!
Glad I played it safe with paint colors and went with greige, lol.
Me too! I have Sherwin Williams Colonnade Gray throughout my house.
I am loving the two tone kitchen cabinets and will be incorporating it into my updates. Thanks for sharing with us at the Waste Not Wednesday Link Party. Looking forward to seeing what you are up to this week.
Thanks for stopping by, Denise! We are planning to give our cabinets a two-toned look this year, too. Can’t wait!
I always find it interesting to read about the different trends every year. I have some of these in my house – unaware that they were trends, I just liked them – such as darker trim in some rooms and mixed metals. Thank you for linking up with Thursday Favorite Things – I’ll feature your post this week on my blog!
I agree! It is interesting to see what the design trends will be from year to year. I like the trends for this year, and it sounds like your house is ready for 2018!
Thanks for a creating this great list of home decor trends. I love that wood is going to be more popular because I love the look and feel of wood grain. Now I just need to find a way to add concrete to my decor. That sounds like fun.
Yeah, that one’s a little tricky. I’ve seen some really nice looking concrete vases on shelves this year!
I think this beige and brown trend will make me happy although I am leaning towards white these days. But everything looks great. Love all the natural elements that have been incorporated into the decor.
Yes! I just love white walls with lots of natural elements in a room.
I love the agate wallpaper! If I didn’t know, I would have thought it was real! I think that will be a big trend up and coming, since when wallpaper was popular before, we couldn’t create your very own wallpaper that looks so realistic that you almost can’t tell it from the real thing!
You’re right! There are so many beautiful options for wallpaper out there now, so we shouldn’t be afraid to give it another try!
I LOVE these trends for 2018! The pictures are all so beautiful! We have some updating to do on our home, and I’ll be keeping these trends in mind!
I agree! There are some great trends this year!
