As we step into 2024, it’s time to shine a spotlight on upcoming trends that we can expect to see in the design world. There are some very interesting and exciting transformations taking place in the world of interior design. The new trends are all about embracing the dynamic, the bold, and the uniquely delightful, while downplaying the expected and predictable. Now, more than ever, it’s time to break free from the ordinary and give your space a hefty dose of personality. So, let’s dive into the top interior design trends for 2024, and discover the features that will define the look and feel of homes this coming year.

Before we start, let me share a few thoughts on following new interior design trends.  The most important thing to remember is that it’s your home, and you should decorate it however you want. If you love these trends and can’t wait to incorporate them into your home, great! If you despise these new trends, no problem…that’s what the comments are for. 🙂 It’s SO much more important to focus your efforts on creating a home that you love and that reflects your personality than to follow the trends.

So, why should we care about interior design trends? Well, knowing the latest trends can be helpful for two reasons. First, it keeps us “in the know,” and can give us some fresh ideas for decorating our home. And second, if you’re doing a new build or major renovation in 2024, it’s good to know what might be going out of style, so you don’t prematurely date your home.

Now, on to the trends…

Trend #1 – Monochromatic Rooms

Monochromatic rooms are when you drench a room in a single color, creating a bold, cohesive statement. You may have seen some of these rooms popping up over the past year, where all of the walls, trim, and doors are painted the same color, and you can expect to see a lot more of this trend in 2024.

To pull off the monochromatic trend, first choose a color that you absolutely love. Then add in furniture and decor that have both darker and lighter shades of the same color. It’s also important to include lots of texture in your room, so the design doesn’t fall flat.

Trend #2 – Happy Colors & Moody Hues

In the new year, expect to see more rooms that celebrate color! Over the past two years, we’ve been seeing the trends move away from “safe” neutrals and subdued shades toward more bold and saturated colors.

Look for happy colors, like alluring pinks, jewel tones, and vibrant blues, to make an entrance. Dark, moody, saturated hues will also continue to be major players in the design world in 2024, It’s all about using color to evoke a mood in your space.

Trend #3 – Character-Rich Furniture & Curves

Furniture with clean, straight lines will always be timeless, but in 2024 it’s all about character-rich furniture. Embrace curves, intricate details, and pieces that tell a compelling story. For this trend, your furniture should transcend mere functionality; it should become a statement of your unique style and personality.

Curved furniture was a huge trend in 2023, and you can expect that rounded styles are here to stay for at least another year. Using furniture with curved lines is a great way to balance out other furniture pieces with standard rectangular shapes and straight lines.

Trend #4 – Natural Materials & Biophilic Bliss

In 2024, natural materials will take center stage—think warm wood, grounding stone, and lush greenery seamlessly integrated into your living space. The result? An oasis of tranquility within the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Biophilic design aims to create living spaces where humans are more connected to nature, and it’s expected to become a major trend in 2024. The basic principles of biophilic design include using plenty of natural materials like wood and stone, adding lots of green plants, and maximizing natural light. For this trend, think about embracing the view out your window, using tons of plants, and anything that brings the outdoors in…literally!

Trend #5 – Unique Tiles & Zellige Love

Tiles with unique patterns, shapes, and colors will be super popular in 2024.  Think of your tile selection as an artistic expression of your personality, and embrace designs that have a unique or handmade look. You can even enjoy this trend in smaller doses, like in your powder room, in a shower niche, or behind the stove in your kitchen.

Zellige tiles will continue to be a huge trend in 2024, with their mesmerizing colors and imperfect aesthetic. Zellige tile in the shower? Yes, please! Zellige tile for the kitchen backsplash or wet bar? Of course!

Trend #6 – Statement Kitchen Elements

When it comes to the kitchen, statement countertops and range hoods are taking the stage, blending functionality with high-end style. Look for countertops that have beautiful color, movement, and veining. Installing those same countertops up the wall for a seamless backsplash, will also continue to be a huge trend.

When it comes to range hoods, 2024 will embrace the hood as a canvas for color or unique sculptural details. The range hood has traditionally been clad in stainless steel, or meant to disappear into the background, but not anymore! The trend for 2024 is to give this kitchen essential a stylish twist, and have it contribute to the wow factor of your kitchen.

Trend #7 – Murals vs. Wallpaper

Wallpaper is still very much on-trend in 2024, but with a new twist. The new year ushers in the era of murals, providing a one-of-a-kind touch to your walls. Repeat-pattern wallpaper in a room is lovely, but a full-wall mural scene is an opportunity for self-expression.

Trend #8 – Personalized Living Spaces

For 2024, home decorating is about embracing individuality. Homes should no longer be generic or look cookie-cutter. Instead, your home should become your own deeply personal sanctuary. It’s more important than ever to fill your home with furniture and decor that reflects your personality and shares your life experiences with visitors. Think of your home as an extension of your identity!

In 2024, look for ways to showcase your unique decorating style, collections from your travels, and family photos. You can create stunning wall displays with a combination of picture frames and items like plates, baskets, clocks and more. Frambridge and Mixtiles are great sources for custom framing.

Trend #9 – Embracing Unique Design Styles

In the new year, you’ll be seeing several interior design styles take center stage. Elements of Traditional style are starting to come into play, with a celebration of architectural details, the beauty of natural wood, and luxurious fabrics. However, minimalism and modern touches are still quite popular.

Three trendy design styles for 2024, that you may not be familiar with, are Cottagecore, Japandi, and Minimalist Luxe.  Each style brings its own unique charm, but the most important thing is to find a style that resonates with you, and reflects your personality. Here’s a little more about each style.

Cottagecore

Cottagecore is a style that celebrates the idea of simple living. Imagine a quaint cottage in the country, filled with charming wallpaper and old fashioned kitchen tools, where you spend your days baking bread, gardening, and sewing. That’s the cottagecore aesthetic, in a nutshell.

Japandi

Japandi style is a blend of Japanese and Scandinavian interiors. It focuses on serene, minimalist, and functional design, with an emphasis on finding the beauty in imperfect things. With Japandi style, it’s also very important to create a connection with nature, by incorporating natural elements and plants into your decor.

Minimalist Luxe

Minimalism is the idea of living with less, where luxury often implies extravagant living. So, how do these two come together into one design style? The idea is to embrace the functional, sparseness of the minimalist style, while ensuring that each piece is rooted in luxury. For example, you could have a minimalist dining room table and chairs paired with a luxurious chandelier.

Trend #10 – Texture Galore

Living spaces that incorporate a lot of texture will be on trend in 2024. From lush, cozy fabrics you can’t help but touch, to finishes that engage the senses, it’s all about creating an environment that is exciting to look at and intriguing to touch. When it comes to using texture in design, be sure to strike a balance between hard & soft and rough & smooth items for best results.

What’s Out in 2024 ❌

  • Bright Whites and Grays: The era of stark whites and clinical grays is taking a sabbatical, making room for warmer, more inviting tones.
  • Simple Furniture Without Character: Say no to the plain and mundane. Furniture with personality is the way to go in 2024.
  • Ultra Minimalism: While the love for simplicity endures, 2024 craves richness and depth, moving beyond the starkness of ultra-minimalist styles.
