It’s that time again! Time to look forward to a new year, and the new interior design trends it will bring. Every year, leading paint manufacturers announce their paint colors of the year. These paint colors have been selected by color experts and designers to represent the upcoming year’s trends, and are a great indicator of which colors will be hot in the design world. While manufacturers used to choose just one “color of the year,” this year it seems many of them have decided to go with color palettes of the year. With 2020 being such a challenging year, I’m hoping for some fresh new colors to inspire and uplift me, and paint manufacturers seem to be on board with this. Most of them have selected paint colors for 2021 that are all about relaxation, reconnecting, and creating a cozy, and comfortable home. Let’s take a look at the paint color trends for 2021!

Benjamin Moore

I absolutely love Benjamin Moore’s pick for their color of the year. It’s Aegean Teal 2136-40. It’s a beautiful, uplifting, soothing teal…not too dark, not too bright, just right. Use this versatile teal in your living room, bedroom, on your cabinets, or on your front door! Aegean Teal also looks amazing with natural wood tones, crisp white trim, and copper accents, too.

Sherwin Williams

Sherwin-Williams chose one of my all-time favorite colors for their 2021 color of the year – Urbane Bronze. It is a rich, dark, warm paint color that can give your room a grounded and comfortable vibe. If you’re looking for an almost-black color to add drama to your room, Urbane Bronze is a great choice! For a sophisticated look, pair it with light-colored neutrals to balance out this dark shade.. Check out the video and pictures below for inspiration.

PPG

PPG chose three “comforting, compassionate, and optimistic” colors to represent their paint colors of the year for 2021. The first is Transcend, a neutral, mid-tone beige color that can serve as a warmer alternative to cool grays. Second is Big Cypress, which is a cozy version of an earthy, red clay. The third color in the palette is Misty Aqua, a watered-down teal that feels very beachy, and is basically the opposite of the other two shades.

Behr

Behr assembled a palette of 21 “comfortable and inspiring” colors for 2021. Like the other palettes this year, you’ll see very few shades of gray, and many more shades of beiges, blues, and greens. Watch the video for a quick overview.

Behr’s first collection is the Casual Comfort Palette of four earthy, refined neutrals. Their second palette is the Calm Zone, which includes a soothing range of blues and greens. Next is the Subtle Focus palette, featuring subtle shades of blue, green, blush, rust, and gold. The next color palette is called Quiet Haven, with dark, statement colors that can be used to create an oasis. Finally, you have the Optimistic View color palette, which includes playful, vibrant colors from around the globe.

Farrow & Ball

Farrow & Ball chose a palette of “rejuvenating” shades, divided into several collections, to encompass their color forecast for 2021, If you’re not familiar with Farrow & Ball, they have a reputation for bold, saturated, luxurious hues, and a price point to match. But, you’ll find F&B colors on many designers’ lists of favorite paint colors, including mine. Farrow & Ball says that 2021 will bring about warmer colors, as we move away from cool grays and blues. I agree about the cool grays, but I don’t think blues are going anywhere anytime soon.

The “Rich and Warm” collection features three cozy, chocolatey browns and reds. Preference Red is a popular shade, if you’re looking for a gorgeous, deep, sophisticated red.

The “Clean and Timeless Blues” collection features four classic shades of blue, including one of my favorites F&B – Stiffkey Blue.

“Natural Greens” is a palette of, you guessed it, earthy greens! Smoky greens are going to be popular in 2021, and Green Smoke and Treron are both beautiful choices!

Valspar

Valspar announced their 12 paint colors of the year are “all about making you feel cozy and comfortable.” They selected colors that are on trend for today, but also several familiar and timeless favorites  Even though they didn’t choose it as their “paint color of the year,” I have to give a special shout out to Academy Gray. It’s one of my favorite Valspar colors, and is just gorgeous in dining rooms and bedrooms!

Pratt & Lambert

Pratt & Lambert has selected Contemplative, a relaxing, rich, moody green, as their 2021 color of the year. They chose this particular hue for its ability to make a room feel calm, elegant, and modern, and it really is a beautiful, soft shade of green. Prediction…watch for gorgeous shades of  green like this to pop up all over your Instagram feeds in 2021! Along with their color of the year, Contemplative, Pratt & Lambert selected a palette of 20 diverse paint colors to represent color trends for 2021. You can check out the entire collection, and download the Pratt & Lambert 2021 Color Trends brochure here.

So, what do you think of the color trends for 2021? Are you happy to see grays going away, and warmer colors like beiges and reds coming back? What do you think of the all the greens?

My 2021 Color Prediction – Trends can take a little time to become mainstream, so I predict that we’ll continue to see light colors, like off-whites and light greiges, dominate our walls in 2021. But, you’re also going to see dark, rich colors, like off-blacks, smoky greens, and deep blues, being used more often to create cozy, den-like spaces.

Hard to believe 2020 is almost over, and the new year is upon us. I don’t know about you, but I will be happy to toast away the stress, worry, and disruption of this past year with a big glass of champagne, and a few choice words for 2020. Looks like paint manufacturers understand that in 2021, we could all use a little more color and comfort in our lives, and in our homes. I wish you and your family all the happiness you deserve in the new year ahead. Cheers!
