As a designer, this time of year has me thinking about trends, and what’s coming up in the New Year. I’ll tell you something…the paint trends for 2026 are shifting in aย bigย way. Today, Iโm sharingย 5 paint trends that are officially on their way out for 2026,ย and what to do instead so your home feels current and beautifully updated. Letโs dive in!
#1 – Stark White Walls
White has been having a moment over the past few years. But hereโs the thing…stark whites are out. They’re incredibly hard to pull off unless you live in an ultra-modern home with sleek architecture and lots of natural light. For everyone else? Too sterile and cold.
After years of staring at blank white walls, people are craving warmth again! Beige, greige, and warm whites are trending. These softer neutrals add coziness and more depth of color, which makes your rooms feel more sophisticated.
#2 – Black Paint Everywhere
Black isnโt going away, but the days of splashing it on every accent wall, every door, every trim piece are slowing down. Why? Too much black can create a strong contrast, especially with stark white walls, making a space feel a bit harsh.
Instead, 2026 is all aboutย dark, moody colors with character.ย Think deep browns, smoky plums, and off-blacks with a whisper of green or blue. These colors can still give you the drama you want, but feel softer, richer, and more enticing.
#3 – Vibrant, One-Off Accent Walls
The bold teal wall behind the sofa? The hunter green wall in your bedroom? Yepโฆ those are fading out.
Accent walls arenโt wrong, but todayโs approach to color is more elevated. The new trend is monochromatic color drenching – painting the walls, trim, and even ceiling in the same color for a fully immersive, cozy vibe.
If that feels too intense, another big 2026 look is keeping your walls neutral and bringing personality into the room through furniture, textiles, art, and accessories.

#4 – Cool Gray Everything
If you still have gray walls from the 2010s, this is your sign…itโs time to change things up!
Cool grays had a massive run, but they look cold and flat in most spaces, and design is moving toward colors that are warmer and softer. You donโt have to jump back to full-on beige if you don’t want to, but shifting intoย greigeย will update your home instantly.

#5 – High-Contrast Black & White Exteriors
This one might surprise you, but the โbright white house with black trimโ trend has officially peaked. If you’ve been planning to paint your exterior this color scheme in 2026…go for it. But just know that this trend will be phasing out over the next few years.
Heading into 2026, exteriors are softening. Instead of crisp, harsh contrast, homeowners are choosing warm whites, taupes, putty tones, rich browns, and charcoal accents. These palettes feel elevated, timeless, and far more welcoming.
