how to add character to a new build home

Moving into a new build home has its perksโ€”everything is clean, functional, and brand-spanking new. But letโ€™s face it, builder-grade spaces often feel like blank canvases desperately crying out for some personality. If your home feels more “cookie-cutter” than unique, donโ€™t worry. With a few minor upgrades and some creative tweaks, you can transform your new build into a house that exudes character and charm โ€” all without blowing your budget. In this post, you’ll discover 12 ideas for how to add character to a new build home. By incorporating some (or all!) of these ideas, you can do away with those builder-basic vibes and quickly give you new home its own unique personality.

1. Start with Paint

When it comes to transforming a new house, paint is your best friend! Builders love to cut costs by painting every wall in new build homes the same color. But, that creates a home that lacks personality because every room looks the same. By painting your walls in colors that showcase your decorating style, you can set the tone for the entire house. Do you long for calm, relaxing spaces? Choose soft blues or muted greens. Want to make a bold statement? Go for jewel tones like deep emerald, or navy blue to instantly elevate your rooms.

But donโ€™t stop at the wallsโ€”extend that color creativity to your kitchen island or bathroom vanity. A painted island in a bold color like dark blue, sage green, or charcoal gray can act as a gorgeous focal point in an otherwise neutral kitchen. Along the same lines, a bathroom vanity painted in a beautiful, rich color can transform a simple powder room into a designer-inspired space.

Pro Tip: Test paint colors on your walls before committing to them! Viewing samples on your walls is an easy way to ensure you choose the right color for your room’s lighting conditions. Don’t skip this step!

2. Add an Accent Wall

Accent walls can pack a big design punch without overwhelming your space. When it comes to accent walls, there are tons of options. You can install patterned wallpaper, with a floral or geometric pattern, or a beautiful mural design. If wallpaper isnโ€™t your thing, you could do a textured option, like vertical shiplap, picture frame moulding, or board and batten. Even a simple painted accent wall in a contrasting color can completely change the look of a room.

To keep your space looking cohesive, pull colors or patterns from your existing decor. For example, if your rug has a touch of navy, a navy blue accent wall could be the perfect thing to tie the room together. Accent walls are one of the best ways to elevate the look of a room, while adding some major character to the space.

Expert Tip: An accent wall is a great way to experiment with bold choices without committing to a full-room overhaul. This is the perfect opportunity to try that dark, moody color you’ve been eyeing!

3. Change Light Fixtures

Swapping out builder-basic lighting is another easy and effective way to add character to a new build. Those uninspired flush mounts (ahem, “boob lights”) have got to go! Replace them with statement lighting that reflect your design style and add a touch of sophistication to the space. Think oversized pendants for the kitchen, a stunning chandelier in the dining room, or a modern ceiling fixture for your living room.

Love to decorate with vintage pieces? Install retro-inspired fixtures that complement your antique furniture, and add a layer of history to your home. Prefer a modern vibe? Shop for contemporary sconces or industrial-style fixtures to bring a little edgy sophistication into your new house. Customizing your light fixtures will add so much character to your new home.

Pro Tip: Most new build homes don’t include dimmer switches, but they’re a simple change and an easy way to control the mood of your space. Upgrade your switches for a cozy, customizable experience.

4. Upgrade Your Bathroom Mirrors

Those big, frameless, builder-grade bathroom mirrors are functional but lack personality. Swap them out for framed or custom trimmed mirrors that “reflect” your decorating personality (see what I did there?). Consider round, arched, or even gilded frames for a touch of elegance. For a modern farmhouse or Bohemian vibe, go with rustic wood frames.

If youโ€™re working with a double vanity, consider using two separate mirrors instead of one long piece. It creates more of a high-end, designer look. Wall-mounted medicine cabinets with mirrors and integrated storage are also affordable ways to add style and functionality, especially in smaller bathrooms.

5. Install Wainscoting or Other Wall Trim

Nothing transforms a bland new build faster than unique trim details, like wainscoting or picture frame moulding. These architectural details instantly give a newer home that timeless character that you often see in an older home. Wainscoting is especially stunning in dining rooms, entryways, hallways, and even on staircase walls.

If youโ€™re DIY-savvy, consider adding wainscoting to your powder room, or create a grid wall in your dining space or bedroom. For a quick win, use pre-made picture moulding kits to create your own stunning accent walls anywhere in your home. If you lean more modern, try vertical shiplap or a geometric feature wall. The key is to keep the design cohesive with the overall style of your home, whether itโ€™s traditional, coastal, modern or something in between.

6. Add Custom Built-Ins

Installing built-ins is my favorite way to add character to a home. Built-ins are sophisticated, timeless, and incredibly functional too. With built-ins, you can turn a big, blank wall into a wall of bookshelves or create a cute window seat with storage in your child’s bedroom. Built-ins are great for adding dimension and character to any room, not to mention a ton of storage.

If your budget doesnโ€™t allow for full custom built-ins, there are some affordable ways to add them. Turn to IKEA for build-it-yourself units, or visit your local Lowes or Home Depot for in-stock, unfinished cabinetry that you can customize with stain or paint.

Expert Tip: Built-ins can go almost anywhere in your new home! Besides living rooms, they can also transform a home office, bedroom, kids playroom, dining room, or laundry room into a more beautiful and functional space.

7. Add Trim Around Windows

New builds often have no window trim, leaving them looking unfinished. Installing trim around your windows creates a high-end look that instantly adds character. Now, you may want to leave your windows without trim if you’re drawn to a minimalist style. But, if you want to add character, add some window trim!

When it comes to window trim, you’ll want to choose a style that complements your homeโ€™s architecture and decorating style. For example, a simple, flat trim will work great for modern, farmhouse, or transitional style homes. If your design style leans more traditional, you’ll want a trim with more ornate details.

8. Install New Cabinet Knobs and Pulls

Swapping out builder-grade cabinet hardware on your kitchen cabinets for unique knobs and pulls is one of the easiest ways to make your kitchen or bathroom feel more custom.New hardware is a simple upgrade that is perfect for DIY beginners.  Whether you go for sleek drawer pulls, or some ornate knobs, new cabinet hardware can give your room its own personality and take it to the next level.

Expert Tip:ย Stick to a cohesive finish with your cabinet hardware, but don’t be afraid to mix styles. For example, you can pair knobs on cabinet doors with longer pulls on drawers for nice variety

9. Replace Builder-Grade Faucets

Builder-grade faucets tend to be a bit uninspiring. Upgrading to a more luxurious or stylish faucet can significantly improve the look and feel of your kitchen or bathroom. Replacing your faucets is also a great way to inject your own personal style into the space.  Choose finishes like brushed nickel, matte black, or even antique brass to create a more unique look. And don’t be afraid to mix metal finishes for a layered look that can add more depth and interest to your kitchen.

Expert Tip:ย Most faucet changes are DIY-friendly, but if plumbing isnโ€™t in your wheelhouse, call a pro to ensure a quality install that won’t leak!ย

10. Upgrade Your Window Treatments

The right window treatments do more than block out lightโ€”they add softness, texture, and style into your home. Your new build house might come with simple blinds that are functional, but they won’t do you any favors in the design department. When it comes to window treatments, interior designers (like me) love a layered look! Pair bamboo shades with floor-length drapes for a designer look, or invest in some upscale shutters for a more traditional vibe. Choose patterns and textures that will complement your decorating style for a cohesive look.

Expert Tip:ย ย Be sure to hang curtains high (closer to the ceiling) and slightly wider than your window frames to make the windowsโ€”and your roomโ€”feel larger.

11. Add Natural Materials Like Wood Beams or Stone

Natural materials like wood beams or a stone fireplace can bring warmth and character to a new build. Even faux options can mimic the look of real wood or stone at a fraction of the cost. Take a look at the faux wood beam we installed in our new build home. It made the kitchen feel very custom and so much cozier.

12. Dress Up Your Ceilings

Ceilings are often overlooked, but they’re a blank canvas that can be dressed up in a number of different ways. You can paint them a contrasting color, add wallpaper for drama, or install planks or beams for more visual interest. These special details and unique architectural features can turn a plain ceiling into a showstopper.

Expert Tip: Dark colors can make high ceilings feel a bit lower, and make the entire room feel more cozy. On the other hand, if you have smaller rooms or lower ceilings, stick with light colors to make the space feel larger.
