The holidays are fast approaching, and if you haven’t started yet, it will soon be time to bust out the holiday decor and deck the halls. I don’t know about you, but I like to start my holiday decorating the weekend after Thanksgiving. I guess you could say I’m a “one holiday at a time” kinda girl…I like to let one holiday pass before I start thinking about the next one. If you’re getting ready to do some holiday decorating, here are 10 holiday decorating tips and ideas that can make this year’s decor feel extra special.

1. Light Some Candles

There’s nothing better than the nostalgic smell of the holidays. Not only will lighting some candles make your entire house smell amazing, but their soft flickering glow can make any room feel more cozy. My favorite holiday candle is the Nest Holiday Classic Candle…it’s truly the best!

2. Hang Boxwood Wreaths

Tie a beautiful ribbon around it, and hang a boxwood wreath on your windows (inside or out), your bathroom mirrors, the back of your barstools, on your french doors, and even on your kitchen cabinets. Ballard Designs has a great mini size that happens to be on sale already for Black Friday, and Creative Coop has another great one available year-round.

4. Think outside the box with your colors

Traditionally, we decorate with red & green for Christmas and blue & white for Hanukkah, but there are other great colors you could use to decorate for the season. Sprinkle in some silver and gold, opt for a neutral color palette of black and white, or go crazy with some pink. Have fun with it, and make it your own!

4. Mix your holiday pillow patterns

I like to keep a set of holiday pillow covers stashed away, and put them over my normal pillows for the season. Don’t be afraid to play with different patterns within the same color scheme for your holiday throw pillows. When it comes to interior design, as long as pillows have the same colors in them, you can generally mix different patterns. For more tips about mixing and coordinating pillows, check out this post.

5. Decorate your bookshelves

We don’t always think about decorating our bookshelves for the holidays, but it can be easy to add a little seasonal flair to your shelves. Sprinkle in a few ornaments, a couple of pretty little wrapped gifts, some fake holly sprigs, or small holiday signs on your shelves to keep things festive, without having to replace all of your normal decor.

6. Embrace garlands

Garlands can instantly transform a home into a holiday haven. String garlands on your stair rails, garlands on your fireplace mantel, or hang them around your doorways or windows. For those of you who prefer a more minimalist look at the holidays, but still want to make things feel cozy, garlands can be your best friend.

7. Keep it cozy

Make sure you have plenty of soft or chunky throw blankets on hand for those chilly winter nights ahead. Keep it subtle with white, or go bold with a festive plaid throw. Even though I don’t use a lot of red in my day-today decorating, I have a favorite red plaid throw blanket that comes out every year at this time.

8. Use natural elements

Bring the outside in with some birch logs, pine cones, and branches to create an “au naturel” holiday display. Bundle them together with a beautiful holiday ribbon, or place them in a cute bucket with some fairy lights…easy and inexpensive! You’d be surprised what you can find right outside your door to create some beautiful and natural holiday decor.

9. Add shine with mixed metallics

It’s true that you can mix metals in interior design, and now is the perfect time to give it a try. Add some extra shine and sparkle to your decor with silver, gold, and copper…all co-mingling together. All those metallics will help reflect your candle and firelight, creating a glamorous and sophisticated mood.

10. Turn your gifts into decor

Don’t have gifts to put under the tree yet? That’s not a problem. Wrap some empty boxes and use them as holiday decor under the tree. Or, you can wrap three different size packages and place them into a tower on your fireplace mantel. The Container Store is a great place to score empty boxes of all different shapes and sizes, and they have beautiful wrapping paper, too.

The holidays are a wonderful time of year, and it’s fun to transform your home to reflect spirit of the season. I hope you use these 10 holiday decorating tips to create a memorable backdrop for entertaining your family and friends this year, and for many holidays to come. Happy decorating!
