Is Edgecomb Gray warm or cool?

Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray is a greige, which is a color that sits somewhere between a gray and a beige. Greiges tend to be universally loved for their neutral look and subtle warmth, and are a perfect choice for a whole house color. Edgecomb Gray is considered a warm color, with its subtle beige tones.

Greiges can be a bit of a chameleon, depending on the lighting in your home. While Edgecomb Gray is a warm color, it can lean slightly more gray in a room that doesn’t get a lot of natural light. On the other hand, if your room is west-facing, and gets a lot of late afternoon sun, BM Edgecomb Gray could look warmer (more beige). Despite these potential shifts, Edgecomb Gray is a very reliable paint color that rarely looks too gray or too beige, which is just one reason it’s so popular.

What is the undertone of Edgecomb Gray?

Undertones are sneaky colors that hide beneath the surface of a paint color, revealing themselves in certain lighting conditions. Depending on the lighting in the room, the undertones can make the paint color look slightly different than expected or desired.

Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray is a warm greige with a very slight yellow-green undertone. In fact, many greiges have a slight green undertone to them.  You might see its subtle green tone appear in certain lighting conditions, like artificial light, but this isn’t a color that people often describe as looking green. People usually say Edgecomb Gray is either just right, slightly too gray, or slightly too beige. Plus, having a slight green undertone is often viewed as a positive thing, because it can give the paint color a more natural, earthy feel.

Where to use Edgecomb Gray

Edgecomb Gray is a color you can feel confident using anywhere in your home. It’s a lighter greige that works great as a wall color in any room, and/or as a cabinet color.  With today’s trend being white or light neutral wall colors, Edgecomb Gray is a solid option for a fresh, current look. And, if you’re on the hunt for an exterior paint color that will be light and bright, but not quite white, be sure to give Edgecomb Gray a try.

Let’s take a look at some pictures, so you can see why Edgecomb Gray is so popular and versatile. It might just be the perfect paint color for your home!

As a whole-house color…

First, I want to show you some pictures of Edgecomb Gray used as a whole-house color. This gorgeous foyer features Edgecomb Gray on the walls, combined with some pretty fantastic trim work and wainscoting.

Here’s another great example of BM Edgecomb Gray used on the walls of this gorgeous living room. Edgecomb Gray gives a nice subtle contrast against white trim, and rarely looks too gray or cold in a room.

In the bedroom…

Next up is a lovely, neutral guest bedroom painted with BM Edgecomb Gray. In this picture, you can see how Edgecomb Gray can vary from a soft, subtle color in brighter lighting to a more noticeable greige in shadow. See how well this greige works as a bridge between warm colors, like browns and wood tones, and also grays, like in the rug and headboard?

In a nursery or kids room…

Do you need a light, gender-neutral color for your nursery or kids room? Put Edgecomb Gray on your list of colors to sample. You can pair it with any style and color palette, and it will be a wall color that can grow along with your little one. Check out this sweet nursery with Edgecomb Gray on the walls and pops of blue throughout…adorable!

In the kitchen…

Edgecomb Gray can also be a great option for painted kitchen cabinets, which is a huge trend for kitchen design right now. This elegant, neutral color will look fantastic with wood floors, stainless steel, brass or black accents, and natural stone materials.  With a color that flexible, it’s no wonder Edgecomb Gray is a go-to kitchen cabinet color for designers everywhere!

Here’s another kitchen where all of the cabinets and trim are painted Edgecomb Gray. The walls are painted BM Seapearl for just the slightest bit of contrast. In the picture, you can see how well this barely-there color works with the warm tones of the stone countertop, and also plays nice with cooler tones, like brushed and stainless steel. Keep in mind that Edgecomb Gray could look slightly darker, and grayer, in a kitchen that doesn’t get much natural light.

I’m often asked for recommendations for a wall paint color that works well with white kitchen cabinets. It probably won’t surprise you to hear that BM Edgecomb Gray is one I often recommend. Here’s an adorable laundry room design with BM Cloud White on the cabinets, and BM Edgecomb Gray on the walls. See how nicely Edgecomb Gray offers up just a hint of color to help the white cabinets stand out?

In the bathroom…

Edgecomb Gray is great in bathrooms, too. Here you can see it on the walls, paired with white trim and cabinetry for a clean, traditional, timeless look.

On your exterior…

Edgecomb Gray also happens to be a color I recommended frequently to my exterior paint consultation clients. It’s a great option when you want to go one shade darker than an off-white, or you want to do a light body color with a brighter white trim (like in the picture below). Edgecomb Gray looks fantastic with white trim, and equally amazing with dark or off-black trim colors. This neutral, light greige will work with any architectural style as a body color, trim color, or accent.

So many beautiful homes! Now that you’ve seen Edgecomb Gray in action in a variety of rooms, including on the exterior, hopefully I’ve convinced you just how versatile, and flexible this light-medium greige can be.

What colors go well with BM Edgecomb Gray?

Because Edgecomb Gray is a light greige, it will coordinate beautifully with a wide range of colors.  The warmth of Edgecomb Gray will be a gorgeous complement to cooler blues, and its slight green undertone will naturally pair well with other greens. Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray will work best with warm whites, and be a great contrasting color with dark, dramatic shades, like blacks, navy blues, and charcoals.

Here are a few of my favorite colors to pair with Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray.

If you’re looking for a paint color that is 1 or 2 shades lighter than Edgecomb Gray, check out BM Pale Oak or BM Classic Gray. Need something a little darker? Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter is an all-time favorite greige, along with the slighter darker BM Pashmina.

Is Edgecomb Gray a good color for resale or for a rental?

Absolutely! Edgecomb Gray is a soft, subtle color that appeals to a wide range of homeowners. It can work with any design style, from traditional to modern, and integrates with almost any color scheme you can think of. Homeowners and renters will appreciate this color choice in their new home. Especially since this type of light neutral shade is on-trend today, while still being a timeless color for years to come.

Is Edgecomb Gray right for your home?

Edgecomb Gray is an amazing greige, but that doesn’t guarantee that it’s going to be the right paint color for your room.  That’s why sampling is sooooo important! Lighting conditions vary from house to house, and from room to room within a house. The best way to know if Edgecomb Gray is right for you is to get samples of it, and test the samples in the space you plan to paint it.

My absolute favorite source for paint samples is Samplize!  The sample sheets are inexpensive, and super easy to move around. So, you’ll be able to see the color in different parts of your room, or in different rooms of the house. Get a peel-and-stick sample of Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray (HC-173) from Samplize HERE.

After you get samples, you might find that Edgecomb Gray is close, but not quite right for your room. Or, it could look amazing in one room of your home, but too gray or too beige in another. Here’s some guidance for adjusting your paint color, in the event Edgecomb Gray just doesn’t work for you.

I love BM Edgecomb Gray! This color is very similar to what we chose for our main interior wall color throughout the house, and after almost 10 years I can say it stands the test of time. It plays well with other colors and you don’t get tired of it. Thanks for highlighting the beauty of greiges and for all the example photos!
